Have you ever wondered what those lumps and bumps on your face are? To give you a clue: not all of them are moles!
In a tropical climate like Singapore’s, where we get a high level of ultraviolet radiation exposure, we need to keep in mind the development of skin cancers. Fortunately, the majority of skin bumps and lumps are benign.
The following growths are the most common ones that we see in our clinic, some of which you may be familiar with are Moles, Skin Tags and Warts, Sebhorrheic Keratosis, Angiomas and Telangiectasia and Milia
Moles are very common skin lesions. They are formed from a cluster of pigment-producing cells, also known as melanocytes. Moles can appear as brown, black, red, or sometimes blue. Moles can appear as raised lumps, or they can appear as flat and level with the skin surface. Most moles are harmless.
This is one of the most common non-cancerous skin growths. It may resemble a wart, a pre-cancerous skin growth, or even skin cancer. Despite their appearance, they are harmless.
Most people start to get these growths when they hit their twenties. However, because sebhorrheic keratosis are slow-growing, they will not be noticed till 5-10 years later. They can range in colour from light brown to black, and they commonly occur on the face, neck, chest and back. Sebhorrheic keratosis are not contagious.
Angiomas is an enlarged blood vessel in the skin, from which smaller blood vessels extend, their appearance resembles that of the body of a spider. Spider angiomas can appear at or near the surface of the skin anywhere on the body, and may be considered bothersome depending on their location.
Telangiectasia are small dilated blood vessels near the skin surface or mucous membranes. They usually measure between 0.5 to 1.0mm in diameter. These are normally found on the facial regions like the nose, chin, and cheeks. If you have telangiectasia, you will constantly feel that your skin is flushed, red, and can be a considerable source of stress.
Skin warts are growths on the skin that are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). There are more than 60 kinds of HPV, and HPV stimulates quick growth of skin cells on the skin’s outer layers. They commonly occur on face, neck, legs, and fingers.
Milia are small cysts that appear as white bumps on the nose, chin, under-eye regions etc. They develop when there is keratin build up and skin flakes get trapped under the surface of the skin. Even if you are not prone to acne, you may still develop milia.
The reason to remove is again cosmetic, as most people tend to get annoyed by the sight of them.
