Glow And Radiance Programme

Background

Our skin is the largest organ of our body. Besides being a protective cover, a skin complexion that is smooth, glowing, and devoid of spots and uneven-ness exudes the impression of health, vitality, and attractiveness. Because of the constant attack on our skin by oxidative stress and ultraviolet ray damage, we are at risk of developing various pigmentary conditions as we age. Therefore protecting and taking care of our skin is of the utmost importance.

With the increased understanding of how skin ages, coupled with the advancing technology in medical laser devices, we are able to target a multitude of skin problems to improve our skin quality and texture, in a safe and effective manner.

What causes dull skin?

Dull skin tone lacks glow, lacks energy, and is not attractive. It can happen at any age and any season. Dull skin tone occurs when there is poor oxygenation and blood flow to to the skin, where there is slowdown of the natural exfoliation process of our surface skin cells, and also accumulation of melanin within certain areas of the skin, causing our skin tone to lose its even-ness.

Factors affecting your skin glow include but are not limited to the following:

  • Smoking
  • Stress
  • Pigmentary conditions like sun spots, freckles, and melasma
  • Collagen breakdown
  • Adult onset acne and associated scarring
  • Intrinsic aging
  • Buildup of dead skin cells
  • Chronic dehydration in the skin

What are brown spots?

Many people can experience brown spots and pigment changes any point in their lives. Because it is a generic descriptive term, ‘brown spot’ can mean many things to different individuals. Generally, these are blemishes when too mucb melanin has been produced by the skin in a concentrated area. Occasionally, they can also refer to growths on the skin that has become pigmented. Some of the common cases of ‘brown spots’ that our clinic treat are:

  1. Freckles
  2. Solar lentigo
  3. Age spots
  4. Melasma
  5. Moles
  6. Actinic keratosis

What is freckles?

Freckles are small brown spots that tend to appear on the mid-face, cheeks. They tend to occur more in fair skinned individuals (e.g. Caucasians), but is getting increasingy common in Asians. Onset of development is from teenage years. Due to sun-exposure and sun-loving habits in this part of the world, we are seeing more and more patients presenting to the clinic with freckles.

What is solar lentigo?

This usually presents as a patch of darkened skin. Common in individuals after mid-30s, solar lentigo (or sun spot) is a result of exposure to UV rays, which finally results in accumulation of melanin within skin cells. They usually increase in numbers and size with age, thus they are sometimes called ‘aged spots’.

Solar lentigo usually occurs on face, and hands and forearms.

What is melasma?

Melasma is a common skin pigmentary condition that causes brown, or gray discoloured patches of on the skin. It usually occurs on the face, and appears symmetrically on the cheeks, forehead, bridge of nose, above the upper lips. It can also appear on other parts of the body that has been chronically exposed to the sun.

What is Hori’s naevus?

ABNOM, or Hori’s naevus is a common skin pigmentation, particularly high incidence among Asian females. It is first described in 1984 by Hori et al. The usual presentation of Hori’s naevus is bluish-brown patches on both sides of the face. The usual age of onset is between 30s to 40s. The discolouration can range from mildly visible, to very obvious. It can occur at the same time with other pigmentation disorders like melasma or sun spots.

About the program

This is a multi-modal program designed to fit every individual’s needs to achieve flawless, healthy skin that is radiant even without the use of makeup. The predominant treatment tools within our Glow and Radiance Program are our suite of laser treatments.

The laser protocols are specially designed by Dr Heng to target unwanted melanin pigment molecules within the skin, allow more even distribution of our natural melanin, and bring about a more even skin tone. The laser machines in use are state of the art equipment, selected to give a combination of high peak power, short pulse duration, with varying depths of penetration. This ensure effective clearance of target melanin locus, with minimal downtime and maintenance of safety throughout the treatments.

Yes, the Glow and Radiance laser can be incorporated as part of your melasma treatment program. Melasma is a complex pigmentary condition with multiple factors affecting its development. The first line of treatment that we do for all melasma patients include:

  • Topical medical skincare
  • Sunscreen application and optimization
  • Oral medications or supplements
  • Sun avoidance

Dr Heng will assess your melasma and your skin thoroughly, and may recommend laser treatment if you have the following:

  • Other concurrent pigmentary conditions (sun spots, Hori’s)
  • Recalcitrant melasma resistant to first line therapies
  • Need to improve your complexion in a short amount of time (e.g. preparing for an important social function)
  • Other issues not mentioned above

If you have the following conditions or concerns, you will be able to benefit from the Glow and Radiance Program.

  • Freckles
  • Solar lentigines or sun spots
  • Melasma
  • Pigmentary marks from acne inflammation
  • Generally dull skin
  • Dehydrated and sensitive skin
  • If you do not have the above but wish to achieve even brighter and healthier skin tone

The length of downtime depends on the type of treatment being done during the particular session. Generally, most patients will experience mild redness which will subside within 20-30 minutes, and they can continue with their usual daily activities immediately after leaving the clinic. If your treatments may result in longer downtime, you will be informed some time before the treatment so that you can make the necessary changes to your schedule if needed.

Most patients find the laser treatments tolerable and even comfortable, even without numbing cream. For patients who are more sensitive to pain, an application of anesthetic cream may be done prior to commencement of treatment.

The laser and light treatments within the glow and radiance program is very safe. The most common side effects are temporary redness which usually resolve within one hour. If you are diagnosed to have certain pigmentary disorders during the consultation, the laser treatment may cause some downtime in the form of fine scabs, or tiny, pinpoint bruising. We will let you know beforehand, so that you can schedule the treatment without affecting your work/social schedule.

A glow and radiance laser treatment usually last about 15-20 minutes. Each treatment will include a Gentle Double Cleanse, tailored Laser treatment with various laser therapies, as well as soothing post-laser skincare to optimize the results of the treatment.

You are advised to stay away from intense sun exposure for about a week after the treatment, and may be recommended a range of home-use skincare to aid and hasten the recovery process. You may also be advised to refrain from using retinol or retinoic acid products for a few days after the laser treatments.

You can resume all activities and usual skincare products after the treatments. If your case is more complex, Dr Heng and his staff will inform you and go through with you the products to omit, and the appropriate home-use skincare to be applied after the laser treatment.

The number of laser treatments required to see the results is dependent on your specific skin condition and concern. A rough estimate for time to see results of some of the conditions is given below (actual result may vary between individuals):

Dull skin tone: obvious improvement in 2-3 sessions
Solar lentigo: 2-3 sessions to clear
Freckles: 1-2 sessions to clear
Horis Naevus (ABNOM): common to see lightening of the pigment after 6-8 sessions
Melasma: gradual improvement seen after 4-5 sessions, recalcitrant melasma may take longer and require other concurrent treatments

It is important to keep in mind that adequate usage of the right sunscreen is important to ensure the results of the procedure is long-lasting. Application of the correct topical skincare products is also vital in optimizing the results of the laser treatments.

The number of sessions required varies depending on the severity of the conditions to be treated, and how fast each individual respond to the same laser treatment varies. In addition, after completing the treatment course, some patients may benefit from maintenance lasers. Dr Heng will discuss with you in detail your treatment plan during your consultation.
